It’s one of the most searched questions I see from people who are drawn to this work: what does celebrant training actually involve? And it’s a completely reasonable thing to wonder. The celebrant world can feel a little opaque from the outside – there are different providers, different formats, different price points, and very little standardisation across the industry. So I want to give you an honest, clear picture of what celebrant training looks like when it’s done well. And specifically, what it looks like here.
It’s not a weekend course
I want to address this directly, because there are celebrant training options out there that can be completed in a day or a weekend. My programmes are not those. My Wedding and Funeral Celebrant training each run over seven weeks in the one-to-one format, with 24 to 30 hours of learning built in. There’s also a self-paced option if your schedule needs more flexibility.
I designed it this way deliberately. Celebrancy is not a set of techniques you can absorb in 48 hours. It’s a craft – and a deeply human one. It takes time to develop your writing voice, to get comfortable holding emotionally complex conversations, to understand the business you’re building. Seven weeks gives us that time together.
What you actually learn
Good celebrant training covers far more than ceremony prep. Across the seven sessions in my programmes, we work through:
– the role of an independent celebrant and how it fits into the wider landscape,
– how to gather stories and ask the right questions with sensitivity,
– how to write bespoke ceremonies that genuinely reflect the people at their heart,
– the practical and legal elements relevant to your ceremony type,
– marketing, pricing,
– and business foundations for your first year,
and — in funeral training specifically — how to support grieving families with care and professionalism.
We also cover safeguarding. My funeral celebrant training includes the NSPCC’s CPD-certified Child Protection course, because I believe professionalism and care go hand in hand.
It’s personal — genuinely
One of the things that sets my celebrant training apart is that it’s never generic. Every student receives personalised, individual feedback on all of their assignments — from me, not from an automated system. We work through your writing together. I help you find your voice, not a template voice. And every live session is recorded and transcribed, so you can revisit the learning at any point.
This matters because everyone comes to celebrant training differently. Some students are experienced writers who need to develop their confidence in front of people. Others are natural communicators who need support with the craft of ceremony writing. Some are neurodivergent and need a flexible, patient approach. Good training meets you where you are.
What happens after you qualify
Celebrant training doesn’t end on the day you receive your certificate. All my students are welcomed into ongoing networking sessions every seven weeks. They have lifetime access to their course materials and recordings. You’ll also receive a physical workbook. Because there’s something grounding about having your notes in your hands, not just on a screen.
